A 911 recording released Tuesday captures Kaylub Giamanco warning dispatchers that an armed attacker was at his daughters’ school in Bend, Oregon, shortly before he entered Silver Rail Elementary and fatally shot the gunman. Giamanco’s daughters survived the Oct. 15 attack.
“Someone’s at the school, at my daughters’ school with a gun,” Giamanco told the dispatcher. “I have a gun, and I will shoot them right now if I have to.” He identified the school by name and said he was about to confront the attacker.
The recording, which lasts about 80 seconds, captures the dispatcher asking what was happening and where the shooter was. Near the end of the call, the dispatcher told Giamanco that help was on the way and asked him to describe the suspect.
Four victims were killed in the attack
The shooting killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher. Giamanco killed the 16-year-old shooter after entering the school with a handgun, according to police and reporting by Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Giamanco had previously told OPB that he saw the gunman throw his weapon over the school’s fence and climb after it. His two daughters were inside the building when the attack began.
Police said Giamanco’s call was not the first 911 report. A driver whose vehicle was shot at made the initial call, and dispatchers received multiple reports as the shooting unfolded, according to the Bend Police Department.
The audio was made public by Deschutes County on Nov. 3. Police reported five deaths at the scene, including the shooter, and said a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured.
