Polish authorities have detained six people accused of helping Russian intelligence obtain military components, including parts used to make ammunition and weapons systems. Four suspects, among them a Russian woman, have been charged with espionage and ordered into pretrial detention for three months.
Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) said the group allegedly supplied the components to Russia in breach of restrictions on trade in strategic goods and technologies. The allegations have not been tested in court. The other two detainees are subject to non-custodial measures.
The ABW said officers searched 21 locations in the Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian and Greater Poland regions during operations from October 21 to November 2. It also alleges that all six were involved in an organized criminal group and violated rules governing international trade in goods important to national defense and international security.
The investigation is continuing under the supervision of a unit of Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok, according to the ABW. The agency did not publicly identify the military components involved.
