South African singer Zolani Mahola is preparing to release her second solo album, People Power, in 2027. The former Freshlyground frontwoman discussed the record and her career in an interview with France 24 filmed at FAME Week Africa in Cape Town.

The 12-track album follows Mahola’s solo debut and is already taking shape through released singles, including “XhosaNostra,” “AmaXhosa” and “A Good Time,” according to Mail & Guardian. Mahola has described the project as exploring individual and collective voice, identity and family heritage.

Mahola became internationally known as the lead singer of Freshlyground. The group joined Shakira on “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” selected as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in South Africa, according to Sony Music Entertainment.

Mahola has also been working with filmmaker Pippa Ehrlich on a documentary about her reconnection with nature, which is expected in 2027. The project is distinct from a separate film about Mahola’s life; the two have been described as different productions.

Mahola has pursued a solo career since 2019. The France 24 interview was published on November 5, 2026, after FAME Week Africa’s Cape Town event.
