Democrats won control of both the House and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections, handing Republicans a major defeat despite Elon Musk’s estimated contributions of more than $440 million to Republican causes during the 2026 election cycle.

The result showed that Musk’s financial support did not secure a Republican victory at the national level. It does not, by itself, establish how much his donations affected individual races. The Associated Press reported that Democrats had taken both chambers of Congress.

Donation totals depend on what is counted

A Washington Post analysis of campaign filings estimated Musk’s contributions to Republican causes at about $446 million. Other published estimates used different scopes and reached different totals, so the figure should be treated as an estimate rather than a single definitive tally from the Federal Election Commission.

FEC records show that America PAC, one committee associated with Musk’s political activity, received about $216 million and reported roughly $171.7 million in disbursements from January 1, 2025, through October 14, 2026. Those figures cover that committee alone, not all Musk contributions. The FEC committee records also distinguish independent expenditures from other disbursements; money given to a political committee is not necessarily all spent directly on candidates.

The election’s broad outcome contrasts with the scale of Musk’s support for Republicans, but it does not mean every candidate or campaign backed by groups receiving his money lost. Some races remained unresolved shortly after Election Day, and the final campaign-finance reports were not yet complete. The available figures therefore provide a snapshot of reported contributions, not a final accounting of all spending or its effect on the results.
