Several media organisations in Dublin evacuated staff on Friday, November 6, after receiving bomb threats. The outlets included broadcaster RTÉ, the Irish Independent, Newstalk Radio and Today FM.
RTÉ said it received an email threat on Friday morning and evacuated presenters and other employees from buildings on its campus in southern Dublin. Gardaí, Ireland’s police service, attended the scene. The broadcaster said it was prioritising staff safety and that normal services would resume as soon as possible after discussions with police.
The Irish Independent reported that Gardaí were at Independent House, its headquarters. Newstalk and Today FM staff were also reportedly evacuated. Local radio station WLR FM reported evacuations at RTÉ’s Donnybrook campus and Marconi House, which houses Newstalk and Today FM. It said RTÉ temporarily used pre-recorded programming.
The threats came a day after separate bomb alerts affected European flights, including the diversion of an Aer Lingus flight on November 5, according to the Associated Press. No link between the aviation alerts and the threats against Dublin media outlets has been established in the information available.
The evacuations also came about a week before Dublin was due to host a meeting of the European Political Community. Irish MEP Barry Andrews said on X that the summit would discuss Europe’s security following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He described disruption, confusion and distrust as the aim of “hybrid attacks” and called on European leaders to establish control.
