Oleshky Civilians Cross into Ukrainian-Controlled Areas
Hundreds of civilians have been evacuated from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, reaching territory controlled by Kyiv. The evacuation occurred under a localized ceasefire, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, which began on October 27 and is scheduled to end on Sunday night.
Humanitarian Effort Amid Conflict
Oleshky, near the front line in the Kherson region, has faced a severe humanitarian crisis, with food deliveries halted earlier this year. The truce allowed an estimated 2,000 civilians to leave, a dramatic reduction from the town’s pre-war population of approximately 24,000. Some evacuees traveled through Belarus to reach Ukrainian-held territories.
Notable Aspects of the Evacuation
Ukrainian officials noted the operation required extensive coordination, with evacuees including a one-year-old infant and a 94-year-old individual. Many brought their pets along, such as dogs, cats, a parrot, and even a raccoon. The success of this evacuation process is viewed as a potential model for similar humanitarian initiatives in other conflict zones.
Continued Military Activity and Diplomatic Efforts
Despite the truce, the ongoing conflict continues elsewhere. Ukrainian forces reported an attack on a Russian factory producing solid rocket fuel in the Rostov region and strikes on military depots in occupied territories. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is engaged in talks in Istanbul with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, focusing on issues including Black Sea shipping.
