Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election in Brazil, an Israeli election that left no bloc with a majority and a deadly high-speed train collision in Spain were among the major events captured in photographs from the week ending November 1.
Lula won Brazil’s October 25 presidential runoff with 51.79% of valid votes, or 64,256,232 ballots, according to the Superior Electoral Court. The result gives him a fourth term. Images from his victory speech showed a lawmaker embracing the president as he addressed supporters.
Israeli vote leaves government formation unresolved
Israelis voted in legislative elections on October 27. Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc and its rivals both fell short of a majority in the 120-seat parliament, leaving the next government unsettled, the Associated Press reported. A photograph taken the day before the vote showed a Tel Aviv campaign billboard featuring Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.
Train collision kills 69 in Toledo province
Two high-speed trains—a Renfe AVE and an Iryo service—collided near Urda in Spain’s Toledo province on October 28. The regional government said on November 2 that 69 people had died and 29 remained hospitalized, including nine in intensive care. The cause of the crash remained under investigation. Castilla-La Mancha’s government provided the latest casualty figures.
Other photographs from the week showed protests in France and India, Mount Semeru releasing volcanic ash in Indonesia, and destruction in Gaza after an Israeli air strike.
