Sen. Chris Murphy was discharged from the hospital Friday after a small hemorrhagic stroke and will miss several weeks of Senate votes while he continues recovery at a rehabilitation center.
The Connecticut Democrat said he called 911 last Saturday after sensing that something was wrong. Doctors found a small bleed in the thalamus, a region of the brain, according to a statement from Murphy. He was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Johns Hopkins, his office said in a statement about his hospitalization.
Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins, described the event as a small hemorrhagic stroke. He said Murphy had made “tremendous progress” and was expected to make a full recovery after rehabilitation.
Murphy, 53, said he plans to spend several weeks at the rehabilitation center, with the aim of returning to work as soon as possible. He said he would stay in contact with his team and Senate colleagues remotely during his recovery.
His office said staff would continue working on his legislative priorities and serving constituents while he is away. The senator also asked for privacy for his family as he recovers.
The discharge and rehabilitation plans were also reported by the Associated Press.
