The United Nations is demanding transparency and a thorough investigation after the death of Mohammad el Shami, a UN Human Rights Office staff member in Yemen held by Houthi authorities since June 6, 2024.

Details of Detention and Death

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, Shami died while in custody under circumstances that remain unclear. His family confirmed his death occurred over a month ago but was only recently informed. The UN has called for the release of medical and detention records to clarify the cause of death.

Calls for Accountability and Transparency

Türk described Shami’s passing as a “heartbreaking loss” and emphasized the need for independent scrutiny and accountability regarding the events surrounding his detention. The UN also expressed concern for other detained personnel, including seven colleagues from its office and various humanitarian workers.

Ongoing Detentions amid Conflict

The Yemeni Prime Minister, Shaya al-Zindani, condemned the death and attributed full responsibility to the Houthis. Current reports indicate that over 70 UN staff members, alongside numerous humanitarian workers, remain in Houthi custody.

Recent Conflict and Tensions in Yemen

The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have intensified their offensive in Yemen, clashing with the internationally recognized government. A naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and missile attacks, including a deadly strike on Riyadh’s airport last month, have escalated regional tensions.

The Houthis previously announced arrests in June 2024 of individuals they accused of operating a US-Israeli “spy network” within Yemen.
