Serbian authorities have arrested serving police officers and a former officer over allegations that they abused injured people detained during student protests in Belgrade in August 2025. The Interior Ministry said the suspects were accused of using force and threats to cause severe pain and suffering.
The alleged abuse took place in a garage inside a government complex while the officers were on duty, according to the ministry. It said the acts were intended to obtain information, intimidate people and punish them unlawfully. Reuters also reported the arrests, citing the ministry.
The incident is linked to protests against the government that followed a deadly disaster at a recently renovated railway station in November 2024. Student groups have repeatedly accused police of using excessive force during demonstrations.
Student activist Nikolina Sinđelić, who was detained during protests in August 2025, previously accused police of assaulting her in the garage. RTS reported her account; the allegations remain distinct from any finding of guilt in the current case.
